‘Digital Marketing’ careers rarely move in a straight line, and most guides skip the messy middle.

I’ve spent years coaching people through exactly this journey, from their first uncertain steps to building real expertise. This is the honest roadmap I wish someone had handed me. If you’re figuring out where you stand, I’m always happy to talk it through.

A few years ago, someone asked me how to “break into digital marketing.” I gave them the standard answer, take a course, get certified, build a portfolio.

Then I watched them do all of it, and still struggle to get hired. So let me tell you what actually happens, because the neat roadmap everyone shares online skips the messy middle.

You start by learning everything at once. SEO one week, Google Ads the next, then someone tells you Instagram Reels is where the real money is. You end up knowing a little about a lot, and feeling like you know nothing about anything. That confusion is normal. Almost everyone goes through it.

What changes things is picking one thing and going deep. Not because the other skills don’t matter, but because nobody gets hired for being “okay at six things.” They get hired because they were the person who genuinely understood paid ads, or who could write copy that converted, or who could read analytics and tell you why a campaign actually failed.

Then comes the part nobody likes talking about: you have to do real work before anyone will pay you properly for it. Run a small campaign for a local shop. Help a friend’s startup with their social media. Track the numbers, even the embarrassing ones. That messy, unpaid experience becomes the thing that gets you your first real job, not your certificate.

Your first proper role probably won’t pay well. I know that’s not what people want to hear. But if you’re learning from someone who actually knows what they’re doing, and you’re touching real budgets and real clients, take it. The money catches up later.

Somewhere around year two or three, something shifts. You stop thinking only about marketing and start understanding the business around it, why sales takes six weeks to close a deal, why the customer service team keeps getting the same complaint, why the product team keeps changing direction. That’s when you go from “marketer” to someone the business actually depends on.

After that, it splits two ways. Some people climb. Manager, Head of Marketing, eventually to the top seat. Others go independent, build their own client base, trade stability for freedom. The one thing that never stops, regardless of which path you take, is learning. The platforms change. The algorithms change. What worked a while ago stops working, and nobody sends you a memo about it!

If you’re just starting out, stop trying to learn everything. Pick one thing. Get good at it. Do real work, even unpaid. And stay curious longer than everyone else is willing to. That’s the whole game, really.
